TMJ Botox Treatment near Leander, Texas
With Botox® being used in popular cosmetic applications everyday to help erase wrinkles, did you know it’s also useful for treating facial pain? Studies show that patients who receive Botox treatment experience significant improvement in pain and function.
We are excited to provide Botox Treatments here at Live Oak Family Dental Care to provide pain relief to all of our patients currently dealing with facial pain and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders.
What is Botox?
BoNT-A (Botox®) injections have proven to be very effective in relieving pain from TMJ disorders, reducing teeth grinding (bruxism) and eliminating tension type migraines. But what exactly is Botox? Botox is a natural protein purified for medical use and its injected into the muscles of the face to help erase wrinkles and fine lines. With that in mind, Botox® temporarily prevents nerve cell signals from reaching your muscles to reduce muscle tension. That is why Botox® is an excellent treatment and it can be useful for relaxing the muscles around your jaw!
How TMJ Causes Tightness in your Jaw
To fully understand why Botox can be the right treatment for you, let’s talk about your TMJ — otherwise known as your temporomandibular joint. This joint acts as a hinge for your mouth while allowing you to chew and speak.
The TMJ is very sensitive to stress — whether it’s physical, emotional or even psychological. Overall, everytime you’re stressed, this will cause muscles to tense up while causing a lot of problems for your mouth and jaw:
- Jaw clicking, popping, or grinding
- Pain and/or swelling around the jaw joint
- Ear pressure, ringing and pain
- Pain or pressure in the nasal cavity
- Sore cheeks and jaw
- Swelling in your face
- Pain around your neck and ears
- Headaches or migraines
- Clenching and grinding your teeth (bruxism)
- Neck and/or Shoulder pain
- Facial pain
The Benefits of Botox
Now that we’ve covered how your TMJ can easily get stressed out, it’s important to know that Botox can actually help alleviate the pain by relaxing and re-training the muscles that are constantly being strained. Let’s talk about the benefits of Botox treatment compared to other therapies/procedures:
- Quick and Easy Effective Treatment
- Non-surgical Approach
- Administered in a dentist’s office
- Easy return to normal activities
Facial pain and headache disorders can be very debilitating. Trying to figure out how to best manage and control the pain requires specialized care that’s customized for your needs! Botox lasts approximately 3 months but over time and with repeat treatments, the muscles re-train and treatments have a longer lasting affect. Botox treatment for TMJ disorder is a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure so we can perform it right in our office! Each treatment session typically takes 10-30 minutes.
